At Least 6 Perish in Stampede at Ghanaian Military Recruitment Drive
At least six individuals have died amid a stampede at a military recruitment event held in a stadium in the West African nation.
The midweek "devastating" event appeared to have been triggered by "an unexpected surge of candidates who overcame security measures and stormed the gates," stated a release from the nation's military.
Twenty-two others were injured, including five who are in critical condition.
A large crowd had turned up at the El-Wak sports venue, in the main city, Accra, with the hope of enlisting in the military.
The country has a youth unemployment rate of about thirty-two percent, the most recent government statistics indicate, and such recruitment events typically attract large crowds and frequently lead to disorderly situations.
The deadline to submit applications for this event was prolonged for a seven days to allow for additional candidates, as a number had experienced difficulties in the application procedure.
Military representative Capt Veronica Adzo Arhin said the crush occurred before the planned commencement time of 06:20 GMT.
Ghana's President President John Mahama has visited the injured in medical care.
Calm has been reestablished, and the enlistment process has since started.
