UK light heavyweight Joshua Buatsi made a winning yet unimpressive start to his career under fresh promotional backing with a decision win over Parker in the Manchester arena.

The Olympic medal winner's activity level seemingly secured him a majority decision in a close 10-round bout at the Manchester venue.

But Parker landed significant shots, connecting with powerful individual punches in a match where the techniques didn't complement each other, with constant grabbing spoiling the action.

Two judges had it 96-94 for to Buatsi, with the remaining official a even score.

"It wasn't my greatest performance but what defines champions? They win," the victor commented in the arena as he was faced disapproval from the audience.

The Londoner bounced back after his first professional defeat - an epic battle with Callum Smith in last winter - to secure a 20th career victory.

Several boxing experts believed Parker, 31, merited the decision but the British boxer endured the second setback of his 28-match professional journey.

His career development has slowed in the past few years through management issues and long spells of inactivity.

Once tipped as the future of British boxing, he now finds himself trying to realize his potential - maybe in what appears to be a final roll of the dice - under recent support.

He opened tentatively, with neither fighter prepared to overcommit in a calculated early stages.

The challenger, whose sole prior loss came at super middleweight against his former opponent in 2022 after suffering a hand injury in the contest, was competing in only his second appearance at light heavyweight.

By the halfway stage, the underdog had made it competitive, creating difficulties for the favorite, who utilized a tight guard to narrowly win the cleaner periods.

The crowd's patience decreased amid constant clinching, with the challenger slipping to the canvas several times during grappling.

The underdog ended stronger, but many rounds were challenging to assess. Although, previous titleholder Carl Frampton - working with the broadcast network - had it particularly wide for the challenger, giving Buatsi just only one stanza.

Buatsi moves on, but with the caliber of heavy hitter Benavidez, and Eastern European fighter Bivol dominating the weight class, the road to world glory - based on this performance - still looks steep.

In the supporting bout, Arthur beat Bradley Rea by divided decision in a outstanding all-Manchester contest to win the European light heavyweight title.

The stadium became quiet for a deeply poignant tribute before the fight as a bell ceremony sounded in memory of Manchester's own Hatton, who died 46 years old in recently.

It was the first major televised fight night in the city since the passing of Hatton. As the final chime faded, the quiet became a roar of "there's just one Hatton".

The fighting during the bout matched the emotion. Arthur was sent to the canvas by a left hook flush on the jaw in the second round, getting up unsteadily to his footing on the referee's count.

But the red-colored equipment of Arthur soon came forward again. Across the ring, the opponent - in competitive blue - was marked up quickly, significant bruising forming under his face as the pair exchanged powerful shots.

Rea, twenty-seven, delivered effective strikes but the champion, thirty-four, fought fire with fire with effective uppercuts as the intensity hardly diminished over 12 rounds.

The victor narrowly won the result with judges scorecards of even score, close margin and 115-112, but each competitor were determined and brave, everything their idol the legend represented.
