The world of Formula 1 has revealed the new vocabulary that will be used to explain the intricate details of its revolutionary 2026 regulations.

The sport is embarking on what is considered the largest rules overhaul in its illustrious history next season, featuring fresh chassis and power unit regulations and the required adoption of fully sustainable fuels.

The new power units, which maintain the hybrid V6 layout, boast a greatly enhanced electrical capacity, driving significant developments in the vehicles' aerodynamic design.

Throughout races, drivers will carefully oversee battery power – sometimes even hot laps – to achieve the optimal lap time.

Broad surveys were conducted with a wide range of fans, including dedicated enthusiasts and casual observers, to understand which phrases would make things clearer of the main elements of the new regulations.

The key objective was to present a range of advanced new areas of the racing as accessible as possible for the broadest viewership.

Consequently, previous placeholder terms for specific components – such as "x-mode and z-mode" for the adjustable aero – have been abandoned in preference for descriptive names that succinctly convey the primary purpose of the technology.

Key Technical Innovations

The FIA states that competitors will have greater control to make decisions regarding battery management, energy recovery, and conservation.

The new regulations introduce a range of settings that will be shown on television graphics to aid the audience's understanding of the race battle.

  • Overtake Mode: This takes over from the present overtaking aid. It provides a short boost of battery power available when a car is less than a second the car ahead to execute an pass.

The 2026 cars will be reduced in size and weight relative to current models, with a car length shortened by 200mm to 3,400mm, overall width narrowed by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the car weight lowered by 30kg.

Overall downforce is anticipated to be reduced by approximately 15-30%, although squads will undoubtedly recover some as they develop their cars.

Aerodynamic drag has been slashed by 40%. The cars will utilize moveable wing elements – both wings will adjust on the straight sections to reduce drag and boost top speed and click back into place for peak handling.

What's Changing in the Engines?
