As he approaches his half-decade plus one year as manager, Mikel Arteta has stated plainly that his future at Arsenal is directly connected to delivering trophies.

A Look Back: Six Years in Charge

The Spanish coach was appointed on December 20th, 2019 and soon guided the team to an FA Cup triumph not long after. Yet, that early success remains his lone major honor after taking over from Unai Emery.

“I can,” the manager said in response to a query about staying beyond 2027. “But it’s about today. And many things need to fall into place in the near future as well to earn the right.”

This weekend sees the six-year milestone with a fixture against Everton, the very same club Arsenal played immediately following his role was made public.

Present Challenges

As trailing Manchester City taking on West Ham on Saturday afternoon, Arsenal risk losing top spot in the Premier League for the first time. This situation arises even with Arteta presiding over a squad that has been plagued by in excess of one hundred injury setbacks since the start of last season.

Arteta is under a contract with a year and a half left on the contract he inked in 2024, but is acutely aware that he must deliver sooner rather than later.

The Manager's Mandate

Arteta elaborated, stressing the constant necessity to justify his role. “My belief is that a manager has to earn the right to be here tomorrow. And that’s how how you react, how you communicate, how you go into the dressing room, the signal you send.”

Arteta continued, praising the strong backing from the board and owners, but pinpointing the squad's dedication as most crucial. “At the end, the key individuals are those players... During my tenure, I’ve seen just players with a level of attention, willingness to improve and give their all to the team.”

Injury Concerns

The squad faces the weekend fixture managing an additional absence. Defender Ben White has been ruled out with a muscle problem that is expected to see him miss action for the coming weeks.

A Different Club

Regardless of the fitness woes and the high-stakes environment, Arteta feels the club's “objectives and communication” are profoundly distinct from when he initially took over.

Arteta highlighted the record-breaking achievements as a sign they are nearing their goal. “Examine the performances, all the historical marks we surpassed... We still have yet to do that [win trophies]. But that tells you the caliber we've reached.”

Arteta concluded, “That is a level that the Premier League has never experienced in the past. And we want to achieve even higher goals. And if we do that, I think we are on the right path to winning.”
