When Sunbathers Fled Violence, Widely-Shared Image Depicts Beach Patrol Running ‘All Out’ To the Location.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as inhabitant of Bondi, views the renowned shoreline as her own backyard. On that fateful weekend night, she, similar to other local residents, heard pops reverberating through the community.

“Everyone did, but I reasoned it was daylight and you couldn't spot any lights,” she explains. Stepping out of her home, she saw people “pouring up Bondi Road”. The looks on display told her something was wrong.

Positioned on the avenue, speaking to a pair who had run up the incline in their swimwear, she heard someone approaching behind her. The person was a lifeguard, running at full speed to Bondi without shoes from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while transporting a medical device.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I just saw this blur of blue,” she recounts. “He was simply racing by. It was just him running in the direction that all the others was trying to get away from, while holding that large equipment and unshod … He was sprinting towards something that undoubtedly every instinct would instruct you to move in the other direction.

“Without a second thought, but just fully full throttle running.”

An Iconic Image of Heroism During Crisis

The photo taken by Ching of the lifeguard, now known to be Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as one of many moments of valour in the aftermath of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, another beach safety officer, noted that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to assist the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to aid other rescuers, law enforcement and ambulance crews attending to dozens of those hurt.

Collective Response and Assistance

Doolan’s actions was just one of many to be shared by the neighbourhood, with the beach facility adjacent to the site of the incident serving as a impromptu hospital. Reports indicate that fellow lifeguards were also seen taking action, including rushing into the ocean to assist people in distress.

Following the events, messages of support circulated widely. One post conveyed gratitude for the responders who exhibited that “goodness will always conquer darkness”.

The team of beach patrol later shared a communication, explaining they were “coming to terms with what transpired”.

“We are grateful all for your kind sentiments and solidarity. We are deeply moved by the care shown towards our team,” the organization stated. “In time, we will recount our experiences in the belief that it supports those involved.”

Local Government Praise

Waverley council, the administrative organization that oversees many professional beach safety officers, stated that the staff performed exceptionally from the moment the incident commenced through to late that nighttime.

“People have shared so many emotional accounts, but the viral picture of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help save lives is extraordinary,” said a council representative.

“Our lifeguards show altruism every day in keeping our iconic coastlines protected for visitors, but what we observed on that day should be commended.

“While we mourn and grapple with the horror of this heinous terrorist attack, I think it is important that we reflect on just how much good we have observed in the presence of such evil.”
